Do you have a movie buff or book lover in your life? Not sure what to get them this holiday season? Why not create something featuring quotes from their favorite stories! Follow along as we focus on creating a custom seamless print using only words!
As always, we need to start off with sizing. We will be working in the Pattern Creator today, which is built to automatically create seamless repeats by taking any image placed outside the workspace edge and completing the repeat of that image on the opposite side of the canvas (as shown in the image below). The repeated part of your image is now shown as a shadowy-transparent version of itself to show you what part of the workspace this image will be occupying. This makes creating seamless-repeat designs truly effortless!
The Project Creator will always open up with a default workspace size of 6″ by 6″. This means that whatever is created inside this space will then be repeated every 6″ by 6″ until it fills out your yard of fabric.
If you need your design to repeat at a different interval you can go to the Pattern button to open the “Edit Pattern” menu and adjust the size. We chose to double the width of our workspace, as having a longer space to work with would be easier for accommodating the long length of our quotes.
Note: You also have the option to change the background color of your design here.
Note: If you are creating a design that you do not want to be repeated, but instead want to create a design to fill a yard of fabric you would change the width and height to mimic the dimensions of a yard of the fabric you would like to use. The height will always be 36″ as that is the length of a yard but the width varies depending on which fabric you choose to work with. Check out our Fabrics Page to see which fabrics we offer and the width associated with that fabric.
Now, let’s open up the Project Creator to start creating our design. For this project, we will be creating a print featuring famous movie quotes! We started off by gathering all the quotes we wanted to highlight in this project. Your quotes can be from different movies, a selection of quotes from one movie, or even your favorite book!
Here are the quotes we pulled for this project. You may want to have a few that are shorter phrases to fill in smaller spaces or small images that would fit with the theme of your print, as you will likely run into small areas that will be too small to fit even your smallest quotes.
- “May the Force be with you.” –Star Wars, 1977
- “Elementary, my dear Watson.” –The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, 1939
- “Inconceivable!” –The Princess Bride, 1987
- “As if!” –Clueless, 1995
- “My precious.” –The Lord of the Rings: Two Towers, 2002
- “There’s no place like home.” –The Wizard of Oz, 1939
- “It’s alive! It’s alive!” –Frankenstein, 1931
- “I’ll be back.” –The Terminator, 1984
- “E.T. phone home.” –E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, 1982
To add these quotes to your workspace, you will go to Add → Text from the menu option at the top of the workspace. This will open a text box in the middle of your workspace. All editing to the text, font, and color will be done in the text menu shown on the left side of the screen.
Make sure to create a new text box for EACH quote so that you can easily move, adjust the size, font style, and color of each quote.
Once all quotes are added to your workspace, it’s very easy to want to space everything out evenly within the shown square outline. As you can see from the print preview (on the right side of the screen) the current design is kinda boring and there is visible spacing between every repeat making the print appear blocky.
To create a design that flows together seamlessly, you WANT multiple parts of your design to float over the edge of the workspace. Any part of your design that is placed over this line will automatically be repeated on the opposite side of your workspace. Then place other designs to fit around these phrases.
See how much better it’s starting to flow together!
To add more interest to this design, let’s add a background color and change the color of the text. The background color can easily be changed by going to the Pattern button (top left corner of the screen) and choosing a new color from the “Background Color” tool. The text color can be changed by selecting a phrase and choosing a new “Fill Color” from the text menu.
We’re not going to stop there! While this is definitely getting better, it’s still a little flat.
Next, we will change the direction, font style, and size to have the quotes almost puzzled together. These steps will happen simultaneously, as you will need to continue to adjust your quotes until everything fits together while still being legible and without overlap.
We won’t show you every adjustment we made, as we had to continuously go back and forth between these options until we achieved the look we were going for. Play around with it until you get the look you like.
Instead, see the following images of how the layout continuously changed until we achieved the final design!
Once you are done making all your adjustments, you can click Process Fabric to place your fabric order. Now just sit back and wait while we print your custom fabric and ship it right to your door!
