Summer Halter Top!

Summer is in full effect! We decided with the hot weather we needed a fun breezy top to help us cool off. We created this halter top with a little help from Burda Halter Top 07/2016 #118.

We wanted a soft a lightweight fabric with a fun summer print so we chose to get Oranges Lemons Black by NadiaKronfli printed on our organic cotton sateen. This fabric is very light without being sheer and has a wonderful drape to it. Depending on the color of your fabric you may be able to skip the lining called for in this pattern like we did.

We first had to print out and put together the sewing pattern. We also had to add our 5/8” seam allowances and draft the 2 additional pieces as indicated on the pattern.

Once we got all our patterns put together we then cut out our fabric. The pattern called for a lining and closure, but we felt this wasn’t necessary, so we skipped those parts and just cut one top and back pattern piece on fold of the main fabric. We then cut out the straps and back binding piece. All the pattern pieces required cutting on the bias.

After this the instructions were not very clear so we ended up pretty much just doing our own thing and adjusting here and there where needed. It happens sometimes so if you find yourself in this situation stay calm, use your best judgement and pin and pin again before you sew. You can also contact the pattern maker for advice if you absolutely want to follow the pattern to the letter. We were in a free-spirit mood on this one, so we pressed on.

First, we sewed together the side seams of the front and back pattern pieces.

Then we sewed the 2 strap pieces on either side of the back-binding piece.

Then bound it to the top edge of the halter top all the way around finishing off the edges and added a top stitch.

We then added a ¼” double folded hem to the bottom to finish the top!

With our adjustments we were able to make the top more light and breezy just like we wanted and cut out a lot of steps by skipping the lining and free-styling a bit in the middle when the pattern got away from us.  In the end with the right tweaks we got the perfect summer halter top! Cotton sateen is a fabulous cool fabric for the summer, easy to sew & care for. The halter top looks great in this vibrant design. I bought the same design in the pink bacground for a summer shift that is turning into my my go to dress for this summer.
