Meet Our Featured Artist for December
Kristen is the magnificent artist behind Khaus Fabric. She was born in Landstuhl, Germany, and grew up across the United States on the Panama Canal. In the early-90’s she studied at the South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities and received a full scholarship to study at The Marie Walsh Sharpe Art Foundation with Jack Beal and Sondra Freckleton. In 1994, she attended North Carolina School for the Arts, following Parsons School of Design and Columbia College. In 2000 Kirsten opened an international award winning design studio, Khaus Creative, centered in the heart of Charlotte art district, NoDa, where her design studio flourishes and she continues to ‘create’ every day. With such an incredible background we had to learn more and we were lucky enough that Kristen was willing to answer a few of our questions!
Where do you get your inspiration when designing?
My inspiration comes from small everyday life nuances, that are often overlooked.
What made you decide to become an artist?
I’ve ALWAYS wanted to be an artist. I remember as a second grader, I would stay up late and hide in my bedroom closet and paint with watercolors, dreaming that I would one day have an art studio to create everything imaginable.
Of your designs what would you say your favorites are and why?
I don’t have an overall favorite, I tend to prefer designs that are black and white
What would you say is the most important thing to keep in mind when creating your own design?
Design for yourself and the rest will fall into place.
What are your favorite tools/ software to use when creating your designs?
I always start with pencil and paper, this gets the my idea down quickly – From here I move the design to Adobe Illustrator or Adobe Photoshop, to create a printable version of the design
What is your favorite part about being an artist?
Learning. I’m always getting to explore new topics and learning new things
Who would you say is your favorite artist of all time?
Good questions, It may vary on what I’m working on at the moment, but I’ve always liked Mary Cassett, Georgia O’Keeffe, Piet Mondrian, and M.C. Escher
