After going through many of our amazing artist’s Halloween designs. Pamelachi’s designs brought thrills to the crowd! Meet Pamela the incredible artist behind Pamelachi!
We wanted to know more about what inspired Pamela and her fun Halloween designs. So we thought hey why not ask!?
Could you tell us a little bit about yourself and what made you decide to become an artist?
I’m Pamela Hansen (Pamelachi). I am a digital designer from Iowa and have been designing and sketching for as long as I can remember. For me creating something from nothing is the best stress reliever possible, so I don’t think there was any decision as to whether or not I become an artist. I think I just AM an artist.
When I was a kid we had a storybook creator program and rather than spending time writing stories (which is what my parents probably hoped I would do) I spent my time learning how to recolor the pixelated images so that the unicorn’s hoofs could be blue instead of gray. Digital design is just part of me, I guess. When I grew up I spent several years working in a local print shop designing flyers and business cards and that kind of thing for clients, but what really grabbed my attention was the new technology that allows me to create digital prints for fabric. I love designing each piece of a pattern and then putting them together to make a completely new creation. I started so that I could print fabric just the way I wanted for my own projects. The decision to sell my art was incredibly difficult. What if no-one liked what I made? My designs are a part of me, so it took a lot of courage to put them out and make them available for the world. I have to say; I’ve never regretted that decision! I’ve been able to see my designs made into baby blankets, adorable baby hats, quilts, apparel, curtains and children’s pajamas. It is always so much fun to see what people use the designs for!
What are your favorite tools/ software to use when creating your designs?
I make most of my designs using a combination of TouchDraw and Inkscape. I learned how to make repeating designs from YouTube, so I can tell you where there’s a will, there’s a way. When I began designing, My Fabric Designs had not yet developed their creator tool, and I must say; that tool makes it SO MUCH easier to create a great repeating design! I would encourage you to try it. My kiddos have a lot of fun playing around with the pattern creator and are always excited to see their creations printed on fabric when we get them in the mail.
Where do you get your inspiration when designing?
I would say most of my design inspiration comes from my kids. They are still young enough to say the funniest things:
“Mom! Imagine if a whale could do ballet! Wouldn’t that be silly?”
“Colossal squid have the biggest eyes of all the animals. Do they make glasses that big?”
“I can make robot noises!”
“You sound like a crazy alien!”
I wouldn’t have been able to sew these outfits without help, so here’s a huge thank you to Mae Crawford from Mae & Co. for sewing the kid’s clothing for me. Thank you!
Of your designs what would you say your favorites are and why?
My favorite design has to be my dragon wing cut and sew collection. My kids have had so much fun “playing dragons” since I’ve created a pair of wings for each of them. It’s so much fun when something so simple can spark their imagination for hours of play. Plus, dragons have always been my favorite creature.

What is your favorite part about Halloween?
I have always loved holidays (big and small). My mom always did a great job of making every holiday and special occasion feel magical when I was a kid. We never had much money to go out and purchase new costumes every year, or do anything really extravagant, but we did have a big box of old costumes to choose from. I think some might have been left from when my mom was a kid.
What is the best costume you ever had for Halloween?
A cat. My favorite animal has always been a cat.
One year I was disappointed that we didn’t have a black cat costume in the box among the old white sheets with holes for ghost eyes and the witch hats and the funny homemade bumble bee costume that never quite fit anyone. Well, my mom didn’t let that stop her. She took a piece of black fabric (some of my dad’s old work pants) and sewed a tail and stuffed it and pinned it to the back of my black leggings with a bright orange pumpkin pin. Then she took one of my headbands and made me a pair of ears with black and pink construction paper. A black turtleneck finished off the costume. I think I must have been a cat for Halloween for 5 years in a row. It was my favorite costume, and it was one of a kind. It made me feel important that my mom would spend the time to make me a costume just for me. We still have that box of old Halloween costumes and I now use it for my kids. The cat ears and tail have long since worn out, but we still have some of the old witch hats and now I’ve added dragon wings to the mix.
What inspired you to do Halloween themed designs?
I have a lot of fond memories of trick-or-treating with my brother, dressing up in costumes and carving pumpkins every year when I was a kid, so one of my first fabric collections was inspired by Halloween. It includes black cats, dragons, and spiders. They are cute and childish and remind me of all the fun I had with Halloween when I was little.
