For our project we ordered one yard of our Organic Cotton Interlock Knit for the baby blanket and several different fat quarters of our Basic Combed Cotton for our burp rags. We also Purchased 1.5 yards of minky material for the backing to give them an even more dreamy feel!

For our baby blanket we chose a fun large globe print designed by laurenay. For our burp rags we chose several fun designs by fiztin and even added a little monogramming to customize it even further!

Baby Blanket with Self Binding

Supplies:

  • 1 Minky Piece 36” x 46” (stretch going long ways)
  • 1 Organic Cotton Interlock Knit Piece 28” x 38” (stretch going long ways)
    • Or any other amazing fabrics of your choice!
  • Sewing Machine
  • Scissors
  • Pins
  • Matching Thread
  • Ruler
  • Pen or other marking tool

Your first step will be to cut out your fabrics to the dimensions listed above.

Next you will need to find the center of each side on both pieces.

You will then place right sides together matching up the centers on each side and begin pinning all the way around the blanket. This will leave a little extra fabric in the corners on the larger piece.Corners

Once it is pinned you can begin stitching at 1/2” seam allowance all the way around leaving a 6” opening at the bottom.

Next step is to complete the corners.

  • You will now need fold the corners flat with right sides together ignoring the inside piece.
  • Once they are lined up straight you will use your ruler and draw a 90-degree angle line starting at the folded end connecting to your seam line.
  • You can pin below the line and draw another 1/2” seam allowance line above the one you just made and cut off the extra fabric.
  • You will now stitch along the first line you created and repeat for each corner.Corner Trim

Next you will flip the blanket right side out through the 6” gap you left open at the bottom of your blanket.Gap

You will now lay the blanket flat fold under the back fabric at the opening and pin it down to the top fabric to close the opening. Continue to pin along your stitch line to secure your new binding.

Next you can zig zag stich, or double needle stitch along the edge of the 2 fabrics to secure your new bound edge as well as close the opening at the bottom.corner done

You are all done and now have a perfect self-binding baby blanket!Done
